Welcome to our Family History Forum

We are frequently contacted by people researching their family history and are delighted when we can provide information to add to their stories. However, once people leave the village it's harder to trace them and follow their stories.

We hope our family history forum will allow people who share ancestors an opportunity to post information that other family members are looking for or to ask questions that other family members can answer.

Garner family of Eydon

I am trying to find the grave site for my Gt,Gt grandfather William ( Bill) Garner.

William wife died in 1908 and is buried at St Nicholas at Eydon, but no mention of William.

William and two of his children Samuel and Walter, along with Samuel's wife Florence are on the 1911 census , living in Eydon.

Their is a mistake in William's age in the 1911 census, as he was born in 1843 at Brackley.

Would any one know when the family left Eydon as Samuel moved to Oxford and died their c 1960's also Florence is their also. Samuel and Florence appear in the 1939 Registar. but no William.

Walter remained in Eydon for how long I don't know?

Thomas Kench an Eydon family of builders.

It was back in the late 1830s or early 1840s when Thomas Carpenter Kench, the illegitimate son born in 1808 to Patience Carpenter of Charlbury, came to Eydon to set up in business as a plumber and decorator. His old ledger, in copperplate writing, shows that he worked for all the local gentry, farmers and Clerics in and around Eydon and it can now be seen in the Northamptonshire County Record Office.

He married Esther Ell, whose parents and grandparents are buried near the north wall in Eydon Churchyard, and they had 3 children but one (Mary) died when an infant, but Thomas Jr. and another Mary survived with Thomas continuing the family business and gradually expanding it to become a more general builder’s business. Thomas and Esther are buried amongst the snowdrops near the south west corner of Eydon Churchyard.

Thomas Jr. married Alice, the daughter of George and…

The Gubbins Family

The Gubbins family history at Eydon starts late in the 1800s with Syd Tyrrell, our local historian, relating that Jim Gubbins (James William) left Eydon in around 1890 to go to London to join the Police Force although where in the village Jim was living and with whom is not known as he isn’t recorded in any of the earlier Census records for the village. Then in 1888 Alfred James Gubbins, a miller of Culworth, married Louisa Elizabeth Abbott of Eydon in St Nicholas Church and they started married life living in a cottage overlooking Eydon’s village green. Jim and Alf were two sons of John Gubbins (born 1827 in Helpston, Northants) with Jim born at Byfield and Alf in Chipping Warden.

Jim returned to Eydon from London having married Phoebe Eliza Parratt of Bethnal Green and they lived in Royal Oak Cottage which is now part of the pub…

Aldridge Family

Name: ALDRIDGE Location: NEWARK

Post: My Great Great Grandfather was John Aldridge who together with his wife Ann lived in Eydon. John Aldridge was a butler and before moving to Eydon was Butler to the Bishop of Fulham.

He died in South Weald Essex, (where his father lived) in 1851 aged 39 years so this is why perhaps Ann Aldridge ran a Laundry business as she had 6 children to support. When she died it was run by her daughter Frances who was married to John Broomfield. Out of the six children only Frances and Elizabeth stayed in Eydon.

Moderator's Comments: Ann (and possibly John) Aldridge lived in what is now 1 Doctors Lane, Eydon. When John died and Ann had to support herself and her family, she started the laundry in a small cottage in a court next door.

When this burnt down in 1905,…

Bricknell Family

Name: Susan Powis Location: Solihull, West Midlands

Post: Seeing pictures KL053 and KL054 in the archive depicting the Bricknells. Am I right in thinking that Hannah Coy, born Eydon 1803, and who married Robert Taylor in 1825 was the daughter of John Coy and Elizabeth Bricknell? If that' is correct, are there any Bricknells still in the village as we maye be related. But distantly related. Six generations distant in fact!

Post: Susan you are correct through my research of my wifes Coy family, which has strong historical roots in Eydon, I have a Robert Bricknell b1759 in Culworth. His second marriage to Hannah Chapman took place in 1781 in Culworth and the following year daughter Elizabeth was born.

Elizabeth Bricknell married John Coy (b1781 Eydon) and they produced 9 children in Eydon, the first being John Coy (b1802 Eydon).

Hannah Coy (b1803 in Eydon) married Robert Taylor (b1807 Byfield) on 25 May 1826 in Eydon and became the Inn Keeper at the Royal Oak. Robert and Hannah kept up the family tradition and produced eight children of their own, the last of whom was Elizabeth Taylor (b1846 Eydon).

Elizabeth married William Herbert (b1845 Banbury) who also became the Inn Keeper at the Royal Oak.

Other connections to Eydon stem from my wifes great grandfather, John Kingston Coy b1856 who married Jane Elizabeth Ward born 1852 in Eydon. In fine family tradition, they also produced eight children in Eydon, one of whom, Hessie Elizabeth Coy b1879 married on 24 Feb 1912 in the Moravian Chapel, Alfred James Prestidge b1876 Eydon.
